LAST weekly update.. May 2, 2008

Lil' drama: We will be having rehearsal in the sanctuary next week. We will meet in the discipleship house then walk over. Bring all costumes/props so we can practice before our performance next week!

Older drama: This past Friday was the worst rehearsal we have had this year. I noticed that the majority of the class did not practice their lines this past week. As our performance is in 6 days, the students have A LOT of work to do. They need to be going over their lines at least twice a day since it seems they do not know them. Most of the families that attend AAL are going to be watching the performance... all their friends and family. I'm sure the students do not want to perform and have me telling them their every line. And this messes up the actors that DO practice their lines. Drama is work.. but fun work if the students have the right attitude. We are performing a drama with a message, please don't let the time we have put into this play be wasted the last week. So please, please, PLEASE go over your student(s) lines this week.. this is our last week and we want out performance to rock!!

This group will also have rehearsal in the sanctuary. If you are late, that is where we will be. Bring costumes, props, and scripts.

TKD: Next week is our last testing!! This past Friday we went over what we will be doing next week and here is some critique on each student.

Jacob - Chun gi was good. On Dan Gun, make sure you turn the right way. On the first twin-forearm block, it's a back leg turn. On the second twin-forearm block, it is a front leg turn. Same with the chops, first is a back leg, the second is a front leg.

Zack - Your forms are really nice -- the only thing you need to add is STRENGTH!

Benjamin - Chun gi was good, just make sure you go over it a few times this week. You also need to work on your turns in Dan Gun. On the first twin-forearm block, it's a back leg turn. On the second twin-forearm block, it is a front leg turn. Same with the chops, first is a back leg, the second is a front leg.

Frankie - You know your forms as well, just go over them a lot. We want smooth forms -- no thinking!

Kindle - Chun gi and Dan gun were pretty good. Those can be made smoother if you have time. Do San and Wan Yo should be practiced to refresh. And Yul Gok needs to be practiced, practiced, practiced!! I do not know what break you will be doing.. I did an elbow but you never know what Master Steve will come up with. Also! Work on push-ups.. Try doing 10 for a couple of days, then add the extra 5.

Over all --> Everyone needs HARD punches, HARD kicks, and HARD blocks. Kiahs need to be LOUD (you are graded on that), and your bowing perfect and very respectful (you are graded on this as well). Remember, if I tell you to do something or Master Steve, BOW! Also, when he comes in the door, it is very respectful to bow to him.

For our demo:
Jacob, Zack, Benjamin, and Frankie will be demonstrating Chun gi and Dan gun all together. Kindle and Travis will be breaking 1 piece of wood each. I'm not sure if we can do this or not... but to be prepared, the first class is going to talk about the Tenets of Tae Kwon Do. Jacob has courtesy, Zack is integrity, Ben is perseverance, and Frankie is self-control. All they have to do is say,
"The first tenet of Tae Kwon do it Courtesy and it means to be respectful of this and that.."

If you have any questions on anything, please let me know!

All photos by Mary King will be up by Monday! There are about 200 up so far... 200 more to go!

Update April 29, 2008

Pictures went very well this past Friday. I will let you guys know as soon as they are up and ready.

Drama: We only have TWO more rehearsals!! Please, please, please be practicing your lines. It would be very bad if during our performance I had to cue you on a lot of lines.

TKD: Congrats to Kyle, Kaitlyn, and Hudson for passing their testing this past Friday! Everyone else, you have this week and next to perfect your forms.

*For our demo on May 9th
I have..
Frankie, Zack and Benjamin performing Chungi and Dan Gun
Kindle and Travis - Wood breaking
Jacob - let me know if you want to do forms as well or recite the Tenets or Vocab.

2nd class competition!

During the second TKD class we had a competition to see who could stay in the push up position the longest ...

In first place was Travis with 5 minutes and 5 seconds

and in second was Hudson who almost made it to 5 minutes!

So.. the first TKD class will have to try to beat that record!

See you guys next week. :-)

Update April 18 2008

PHOTOS BY MARY KING - THIS FRIDAY APRIL 25TH!

Please bring $5 (for each class) if you plan on having pictures made. All costumes/uniforms need to be brought. You do not have to buy photos. Either way, the whole class needs to be in the group shot. There are no extra fees.

Younger drama: You guys are doing great!
For photos:
Audrey: Little Red Riding hood costume
Jaiden: we are going to miss you!
Maille: Pink shirt, yellow shirt, step-mother costume + apple

Older drama: No excuses next week if you forget costumes! I think everyone has theirs, but pack it the night before and put it in the car so it is not forgotten! Practice your lines as well! If you don't, you mess everyone up, not just yourself. I don't know if we will have time to run through the play.

TKD: All you guys needs for photos is uniforms. Make sure you are practicing forms at home with POWER! Sleeves need to snap on those punches! =].

Also.. I want to know if any TKD student in interested in doing a presentation during the AAL End of the Year program? This is could be performing their favorite form or reciting vocab or tenets. For my older class, MAYBE a breaking. We will have to work on those. Let me know if anyone is interested!

ALSO! The end of the year is soon. Please make sure payments are in. Thank you.

Updates April 13, 2008

Drama: Little drama is going great! Jaiden - bring a cute dress. I may have a dress-up dress for you, so we can compare Friday.

Older drama - You guys should be studying your lines at home. We only have 3 more practices until performance! I also expect costumes to be brought each week. Surfer guys - All you need is a pair of shorts, and t-shirt or tank top, and flip flops.

TKD - Practice forms at home! They are getting much harder. Our testing is May 9th and pictures are April 25th!

Tenets of Tae Kwon Do (learned so far): Courtesy, Integrity, and Perseverance. Perseverance: Never give up! We will learn two more tenets in the next couple of weeks.

Updates April 5, 2008

Drama: We worked a lot on the plays yesterday. Just remember: Bring costumes and props EVERY week.

Older drama students: I would like all of my older students to read the story of Jonah from the Bible and tell me some things from the story that they liked, or thought interesting.

Practice, practice, PRACTICE your lines! Everyday ;-).

TKD: I am working with Master Steve for another testing date this April.

Our first Tenet was Courtesy (respect for instructor, students, building, etc). We learned Integrity this past Friday. It means being able to know right from wrong, and choosing to do whats right.

March 29, 2008

I hope everyone had a great Spring Break last week!

Lil' Drama: We missed Jaiden yesterday! Costumes are NEEDED next week. Some characters have quick changes.. and we only have a few more Fridays to work on those. Props also need to be brought in. What I have made for my sisters is their own "Drama tote." It includes their costumes and all the props they need for their plays. The bag stays in the car that way we will always have it for rehearsals. If you need to know what exactly your child needs to bring.. please look at previous posts.

Older Drama: We missed quite a few people yesterday! Instead of rehearsing, the students worked on their own skits! COSTUMES and PROPS are needed next Friday. They were due in yesterday. If you need to know what those are, please look at previous posts. Costumes and props are to be brought in and used in rehearsals for the remaining Fridays. Also, no scripts in class! Please continue to practice those at home.

TKD: I hope you guys are liking your new forms! We are learning the 5 Tenets of Tae Kwon Do. Each week we will learn a new tenet. These need to be memorized for our next testing. This past Friday's tenet was Courtesy. It means respect for Tae Kwon Do, your instructors, your class mates, as well as the building we learn in. Please review this with your child(ren).

PHOTOS

Our class photo day is April 25th

Mary King, a homeschool student, will be the photographer. She is out looking for experience and this is a perfect opportunity!

The charge will be $5 per student, per class [If a students is in drama and tkd, the charge would be $10]. This includes individuals and groups. Drama students need to be dressed in their costumes, TKD students in your uniforms.

Mary will send me all her pictures and I will post them either on e-mail or on the blog. That way all you have to do is save the ones you want!

I do not need to have a head count.. but I beg that all students be present on this day. If your child(ren) plan on having pictures done, the $5 must be presented at the time of photos.

If you have ANY questions, please e-mail!

I will post reminders closer to the date.

Drama: Spring Performance

The date: Friday, May 9th 2008

Location: AAL Church

Time: During the end of the year program after classes that day... exact time TBA.

This is our only scheduled performance as of now. If you would like us to perform at your church or another location you know of, please let me know so I can run the date by the other students.

Tuition Facts

Every week I have receipts for the previous weeks payments - Please come pick them up. I try to send them with the students, but they either forget or I see them in the folders the next week so it would be great if parents could run by and pick them up for me. (This also helps me make sure we are both on the same page with payments.. ) Thanks!

How to tie your Tae Kwon Do belt

Here we go! Step-by-step...

1. Place your belt around your waist from the back. Leave an adequate amount of belt on the right to use later for tying.

2. Hold the belt in place on the right while wrapping the belt around your waist once.

3. Place your belt in your left hand over your belt and take the bottom and wrap it up and under both wraps of belt.

4. Then place the top belt over lower belt and pull through.

5. Pull really tight!

TKD Testing

Ooops! I forgot to put the times of my testing: 4:30 to 5:15pm.

To practice breaking, I'm going to try to borrow a practice board from Master Steve this week. He is also going to help test you guys! =D

February 23, 2008 Updates

Hey everyone! To make sure every blog is read, I would like everyone to comment this blog after reading. This is to make sure that I know every parent is up to date with the classes. Therefore, any blog concerning a class your child(ren) are in, PLEASE comment it. The link is below the blog and you do not have to be a member. Just type your name and that you read. Some people may think that's silly, but these blogs hold crucial information. For me, this is easier then printing out a sheet each week and giving it to the students, and having the info never reach the parents. (I've seen this happen many times =P). Thanks!!

Drama - Classes are going great! I would like to know who has their costumes so far, who has questions, etc. PLEASE continue to practice lines and older students NEED to being scripts to class. For the Jonah play, I will have a list of props posted with instructions.

TKD - Testing is going to be March 7th, unless I decide we need another week for prep. Here is the procedure for testing:

Beginner class:
Warm ups
5 push-ups
5 sit-ups
5 squats
(Will have to count to 5 in Korean for each of those exercises)
Chun-Ji (Their form)

If passed, the students will advance to the next level, a yellow stripe. If they do not pass, then we will continue to work on the forms and I will test them when they are ready. IF students are only practicing on Fridays at class, they will probably not pass the test.

Advanced Class
Warm ups
10 push-ups
10 sit-ups
10 squats
(Will have to count to 10 in Korean for each of those exercises)
Yellow belts: Do San
Green stripes: Wan Yo
Green Stripes will have to break 1 board with Snap Kick. You have to break the board to pass the testing.

Parents and friends are welcome to attend the testing. The testing itself will probably take half of class or less. So once it is over, I would like to work with the students on some techniques.

MY BLACKBELT testing is Feb 26th and 28th. Students are welcome to attend. Tuesday is forms and Thursday is breaking and promotion. All students at my school will be testing. The gym is located in Murrells Inlet on 17 bypass across of the Inlet Square Mall in a strip mall with a salon and eye care clinic.

February 16, 2008 Updates

5-7 Drama: Keep going over the script at home. Also, keep working on finding costumes. If you have any questions about them, please e-mail me.

8-12 Drama: I love how we can go through the play twice during our practice time. Please bring scripts to class and practice lines at home. Josh has the award this week for memorizing the most lines! Also, I know there are art classes and dance before and after drama, if your child HAS to eat during drama, please provide a small snack. Also, if you have any questions on costumes, please let me know. I will have a prop list ASAP.

TKD: Continue practicing forms at home. I hope to have our first testing in 3 weeks. Let your child(ren) know so that they can be working REALLY hard on their forms.

February 11, 2008 updates

Please read the entire blog! This one has A LOT of information.

Younger Drama: The play is going great! I would like them to begin bringing their costumes by April 4th. This will give us a month to perfect our "quick changing"!

Older Drama: I gave out parts to "What Do You Do for Three Days Inside a Fish?"
Kaitlyn: Callie AND Carla. <-- please notice the change.
Tori: Beth
Josh: Jonah
Alyssa: Angel
Reagan: Manny
Savannah: Mo
Josiah: Zeke AND King
Margo: Sandy
Maggie: Andy

COSTUMES:
Kaitlyn, Maggie, and Tori: Normal, everyday clothes.
Jonah and King: Bible attire. Jonah needs to be kinda plain, while king more dressed up.
Reagan, Margo, Savannah, and Josiah: SURFER clothing. Swim suits, beachy t-shirts, flip flops, etc.
Alyssa: A white gown... or you can wear white jeans and jacket? If you want to dress Biblical or Modern, does not matter to me. Be creative with this!

ALL COSTUMES need to be brought and worn BY APRIL 4th.

OFF BOOK WEEK (no using scripts during class) IS MARCH 28th! That gives the students 6 weeks to practice their lines as well as memorizing the line (or cue) before theirs.

Please e-mail me with any questions.

TKD Students: Practice, practice, practice forms! At least 10 times a week. That's only two minutes a day! Not hard work at all. Also, for testings, white belts NEED to be able to do 5 perfect push-ups (nose touching floor). All you yellow and green stripes need to do 10. Same for sit ups.

February 5, 2007 Updates

Sorry this is a little late!

Little Drama: I love this play! If students go over their lines at home, we may be able to take out the Narrator saying their lines before they say them. That is our goal!

COSTUMES:
Audrey: Jeans; either a red or black top; some sort of red cape, can be fabric, blanket, anything! It does not have to have a hood.

Kyle: Jeans; a polo shirt or anything to make him look like "Manager of Fairy-tale Land."

Jaiden: Jeans; a pink shirt (for Pig); a yellow shirt (for Star); and a dress-up dress for Snow White.

Maille: Jeans; a brown shirt (for Wolf); a yellow shirt (for Star); And an outfit for an old woman (the disguised evil step-mother).

Jaiden and Maille will have "quick changes" from one outfit to another. They will have just about everything (except Snow White dress) on in layers, to make the changes easier. I will have someone backstage to help. =].

Older Drama: We learned how to use props last week. GOOD NEWS! I found a very cute, Biblical play that I am editing at the moment. "What Do You Do for Three Days Inside a Fish?" A comical play about Jonah and how it relates to modern day. I have acted in it before, and I'm sure the students will love it!

ALL TKD Students: I sent home folders with you guys (unless they were left with me by accident), and inside of them is a list of school rules! Try to make sure you study and follow them. Also, work on forms! That way we can advance to our first testing of the semester: Yellow stripes, green stripes, and GREEN BELTS! =D.

See ya Friday!

Courtney

Updates January 27, 2008

5-7 Drama: I gave out parts to our play yesterday + scripts/folder. Little Red Riding Hood is Audrey, Gleek is Kyle, Maille is the Wolf and the Stepmother. Jaiden is the Pig and Snow White. I will have info on costumes ASAP. Please go over their scripts!

Older Drama: I am still working on finding a play. This past week we learned about skits and the students made up two of their own.

Beginner TKD: I handed out folders this past week. There is a page with the moves of the form on it. They only have to know the moves, not the stances at the moment. There are up to the first innerforearm block, punch. Please remind you children to practice! That's the only way to advance.

Older TKD: I hope you guys liked learning how to spar! Please contine practicing your forms, since we did not have a chance to go over them.
